A stadium security footage from IPL 2008 has leaked—showing Harbhajan Singh slapping Sreesanth with a reverse hand. The video also captures Sreesanth in tears, Mahela Jayawardene and Irfan Pathan consoling him… and Harbhajan storming off in anger.
This clip was dropped by IPL founder Lalit Modi on a podcast with Michael Clarke. For the first time, the real proof of this incident has gone public—something BCCI and broadcasters had earlier buried.
Sreesanth’s wife reacts -
'Lalit Modi and Michael Clarke should be ashamed. You’re digging up 2008 for cheap publicity and views. Both Harbhajan and Sreesanth have moved on—today they’re fathers of school-going kids. Reopening old wounds is disgusting, heartless and inhuman.'
Flashback 2008 -
After losing to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Mumbai Indians’ captain Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth. A complaint was filed, Bhajji was fined 100% of his match fee, and banned for the entire IPL season plus 5 ODIs.
Harbhajan’s version
'When I got out, Sreesanth ran up from behind, crossed in front of me, and said something. It irritated me—because I was already out on the first ball, and we were losing the match. That kept running in my head. Eventually, we lost again—our third straight defeat—and I was the captain. After the match, when both teams were shaking hands, I didn’t slap him, I just pushed him. With the reverse hand. But no matter what, I should not have raised my hand.'
Aftermath
Harbhajan has often admitted this was the “biggest mistake” of his life. He says if given a chance to rewind, this is the one thing he would correct. Sreesanth too has repeatedly said he has moved on. Both later played for India together and even appeared side by side in the commentary box.
But 17 years later, an old wound has been ripped open again—this time because of a podcast.
